On the back of a good T-shirt is the question, Ask Me About This...

“What if a T-shirt could start a conversation about a book?
That's the idea I'm testing with my Quiet Empire thriller series.
I've started creating a shirt to go with each book in the series. But I didn't want them to be ordinary author merchandise with a title and my name printed across the front.
I wanted the shirts to do something.
So on the back of each shirt, you'll find the cover of the book—and above it, an invitation:
ASK ME ABOUT THIS…
That's it.
No sales pitch.
No “BUY THIS BOOK.”
Just an invitation to ask a question.
Why “Ask Me About This”?
Think about what happens when you see someone wearing a shirt from a band you don't know, a movie you've never seen, or something that catches your attention.
You might ask:
“What's that?”
That's the moment I'm trying to create.
If someone sees a person wearing a Quiet Empire shirt and asks about it, that reader now has an opportunity to tell them about the book.
If someone sees the Shadow Node shirt and asks about it, they can explain that it's the free prequel to the series.
And if the person becomes interested enough to investigate, they've gone from seeing a shirt to discovering a story.
That's a very different kind of advertising.
The Shirt Is Part of the Story
I've currently created shirts for the books that have reached the point where their covers are ready.
That includes Shadow Node, Quiet Empire, Point of Origin, The Unwanted, and now The Meridian Structure.
And there's something deliberate about the way I've approached the pricing as well.
Shadow Node is free.
So the Shadow Node shirt is the least expensive shirt in the collection.
That isn't an accident.
I want Shadow Node to be an easy doorway into the world of Quiet Empire. Someone can discover the shirt, ask about it, learn that the story is free, and have nothing standing between them and the beginning of the series.
The shirt doesn't replace the book.
It points toward it.
But Does This Actually Work?
That's the experiment.
I'm an author, not a marketing scientist. I don't know whether someone wearing a book cover on their back will actually make another person curious enough to ask about it.
Maybe they will.
Maybe they won't.
Maybe the person will notice the shirt but never say anything.
Or maybe someone will eventually walk up to a reader and say:
“Hey…what's that book?”
If that happens, the shirt has done exactly what I designed it to do.
And that's why I want to ask you:
What Do You Think?
If you saw someone wearing a shirt with a book cover on the back and the words “ASK ME ABOUT THIS…” above it, would you ask?
Would it make you curious?
Would you look up the book afterward?
And if you had already read the book, would you actually wear the shirt?
I'm genuinely interested in the answers because I'm trying something here.
I'm not just selling books.
I'm experimenting with ways to make people talk about books.
And maybe that's the most powerful kind of book marketing there is.
So tell me:
Would you wear it?
Would you ask about it?
And do you think “Ask Me About This…” could turn a T-shirt into a conversation that leads someone to a book?
